It’s been a while since confession. Person’s face. RX: Thank you. Is that ____? I don’t understand. Holy Spirit, teach me all things. What’s my next step there? How? How should I think about _____?
- Evil spirit – AGENDA: Lie, steal, destroy from God. EXAMPLE: “You’re worthless. You think you’re some kind of a mystical saint, eh?! Someone’s probably sent you an important text.” YOU?! Intro
Luke 24. Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles* from Jerusalem called Emmaus and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast.
[… They recap the story of death and alleged resurrection]And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer* these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”
Subtle
1 Kings 19 Then the LORD said: Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD the LORD will pass by. There was a strong and violent wind rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind; after the wind, an earthquake—but the LORD was not in the earthquake; after the earthquake, fire—but the LORD was not in the fire; after the fire, a light silent sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, Why are you here, Elijah?
FFAD Bernard encourages us to grow in such attentiveness to the sometimes barely perceptible “lights” and “nudges” that the Holy Spirit wishes to give us. QUOTE If he can say with the psalmist: “My eyes are ever on the Lord,” and “I keep the Lord always before me” (Ps. 23: 5), shall that person not receive a blessing from the Lord and mercy from God his saviour? (Ps. 23: 5) He will be visited often, and never be unaware of the time of the visit (Lk. 19: 44), even though he who visits in spirit.
Personal
CCC 2706 To meditate on what we read helps us to make it our own by confronting it with ourselves. Here, another book is opened: the book of life. We pass from thoughts to reality. To the extent that we are humble and faithful, we discover in meditation the movements that stir the heart and we are able to discern them. It is a question of acting truthfully in order to come into the light: “Lord, what do you want me to do?”
CCC 2708 Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ. …
1 Samuel 3. Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you,” Eli answered. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “You called me.” But he answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”
Samuel did not yet recognize the LORD, since the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”11The LORD said to Samuel: I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it ring.
Psalm 133. Like fine oil on the head, running down upon the beard, Upon the beard of Aaron, upon the collar of his robe. Like dew* of Hermon* coming down upon the mountains of Zion. There the LORD has decreed a blessing, life for evermore!
Incremental
Psalm 119. Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path
CCC 2705. Meditation is above all a quest. The mind seeks to understand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking. The required attentiveness is difficult to sustain. We are usually helped by books, and Christians do not want for them: the Sacred Scriptures, particularly the Gospels, holy icons, liturgical texts of the day or season, writings of the spiritual fathers, works of spirituality, the great book of creation, and that of history the page on which the “today” of God is written.
